Healing Through Art: Join Us for the Upcoming Painting Progress Exhibition
We’re delighted to have partnered with Painting Progress this year, and they are hosting an art exhibition which also includes artwork created by our members through a therapeutic workshop. Over the past six months, we’ve collaborated closely with their team to deliver creative sessions focused on memory, identity, and connection, including a powerful memory mapping workshop and an upcoming family-friendly art day.
We’re excited to invite you to the Painting Progress exhibition, a vibrant showcase of artwork created by refugees, asylum seekers and allies. This event celebrates the power of creativity in building resilience, fostering connection, and reclaiming voice and identity. The exhibition brings together deeply personal and powerful works of art, from paintings and drawings to mixed media pieces, created during recent workshops. Each piece tells a story of strength, identity, and the human spirit.
About Painting Progress
Painting Progress is a community organisation founded in 2023 by Bowrnamey Thirukkumar, an NHS doctor and artist who recognised the lack of support and access for emerging artists and sought to make a difference. From its inception, the project has aimed to provide a platform for starting artists, offer educational events on creative topics to the wider public, and raise funds for social causes.
Since launching, Painting Progress has hosted panel talks exploring creativity, social change, and resilience; curated multidisciplinary exhibitions featuring emerging talent; and organised creative events such as spoken word evenings and mindfulness-based art workshops. With every project, the organisation centres community, accessibility, and the transformative power of art.
Creativity as a Catalyst for Healing and Community
For refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom have experienced trauma, displacement, and isolation, art can be a lifeline. The workshops leading up to this exhibition offered space for participants to reflect, express, and connect. Creativity becomes a language of its own, helping individuals process experiences, find empowerment, and foster a sense of belonging within a supportive community.
